Principal Technology Architect - Wireless Core
Burnaby, BC, CA, V5G 4S4
Description
Join our team and what we'll accomplish together
As TELUS continues to advance its Wireless Core into a more automated, cloud-native, and resilient environment, this role will be the strategic compass for our network architecture. You’ll partner with senior technical leaders and cross-functional teams to guide massive modernization initiatives, most notably our complex multi-vendor migrations, including the transition to a cloud-native modern 5G Core. Beyond immediate migrations, you will help lay the technological groundwork for the future of our network, introducing AI-driven automation, advanced telemetry, and intent-based architecture to move TELUS toward highly autonomous core operations.
What you'll do
-
Lead the end-to-end architecture strategy for the modernization of our Wireless Core, guiding the transition from legacy bare-metal appliances and proprietary VMs to agile, cloud-native platforms
-
Drive the technical execution of complex multi-vendor migration initiatives, specifically the transition from monolithic, siloed infrastructure to the new 5G Core and modernizing our IoT platforms
-
Define target-state architecture principles that support resilience, high capacity, interoperability, and operational efficiency across our six engineering pillars (including reliability, security, scalability, and automation)
-
Act as a trusted strategic advisor to the Director and engineering managers, resolving complex architectural dependencies and ensuring alignment with long-term technological roadmaps
-
Provide technical direction on integrating Machine Learning, AI, and test automation into engineering workflows to drastically reduce manual effort and optimize network performance
-
Establish advanced telemetry and semantic data requirements that enable improved network visibility, automated anomaly detection, and closed-loop optimization
-
Help define the future 'autonomous core' capabilities by exploring intent-based abstractions and machine-to-machine orchestration models to streamline operations
-
Collaborate across telecom cloud (NFVI), IT, and RAN domains to ensure end-to-end alignment and seamless solution integration
Qualifications
What you bring
-
10+ years experience in telecom architecture, wireless core engineering, and large-scale multi-vendor network transformations
-
Deep, hands-on understanding of 4G EPC and 5G SA core call flows, protocol stacks (HTTP/2, PFCP, Diameter, GTP) and low level configuration of any network generation component, including IMS/Voice, and network slicing technologies
-
Proven track record of designing and supporting cloud-native, distributed, and containerized telecom environments
-
Experience executing complex core swaps, node migrations, and system acceptance in a Tier-1 operator environment
-
Strong background in applying data science, AI/ML, predictive analytics, or automation frameworks to telecommunications environments
-
Ability to influence senior executive stakeholders and collaborate effectively across technical execution teams without formal reporting lines
-
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts and financial trade-offs (TCO) into clear business recommendations
-
Knowledge of 3GPP standards, open-source maturity, and global telecom evolution roadmaps
- Bachelor/Master's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Data Science or related field
Great-to-haves
- Experience with telecom telemetry, deep performance analytics, and building automated data pipelines
-
Familiarity with generative AI or LLM-based tools for engineering optimization and operational use cases
-
Hands-on experience architecting across on-premise, public cloud (AWS), and hybrid infrastructure, with a deep understanding of the trade-offs between cloud specific managed services and cloud agnostice, containerized architectures (Kubernetes, Red Hat OpenShift)
