The Outside Plant Engineering team is a high-performing group of individuals who collectively make TELUS one of the leading telecommunications companies in Canada. The team is responsible for all Legacy Network Facility designs for the TELUS access network and is the gatekeeper of TELUS’s aerial and underground structures as well as theTELUS Copper and Fibre network within British Columbia.
As a Senior Design Specialist, you'll be a strategic leader and trusted advisor, working directly with your team manager to shape the future of our network infrastructure. You'll lead governance initiatives, mentor team members, and represent our team in high-level stakeholder discussions that drive TELUS's telecommunications excellence across BC.
What you'll do
- Lead governance and regulatory discussions with municipalities, government entities, and external stakeholders including negotiating municipal access agreements and maintaining strategic relationships across BC
- Represent the Engineering Manager in high-level meetings with leadership, BC Hydro, Ministry of Transportation and Transit, and other key partners to drive strategic decisions and initiatives
- Oversee medium to large-scale capital projects from planning through execution, ensuring quality standards, cost control, and successful outcomes for multi-million dollar infrastructure builds
- Provide technical direction to designers, construction managers, consultants, and field staff
- Mentor and develop Design Specialists across the team, providing technical guidance and coaching to build capability and strengthen the team's expertise
- Explore and lead AI integration opportunities to transform team workflows, optimize processes, and enhance operational efficiency
- Drive strategic portfolio initiatives including workflow optimization and process improvements that enhance team efficiency and operational excellence
- Partner with internal teams including Project Management, Planning, Construction, and Regulatory to ensure seamless coordination and alignment on provincial priorities
- Serve as subject matter expert and technical consultant on complex engineering challenges, providing sound analysis and recommendations based on engineering standards and best practices
- Review external design packages to ensure quality, accuracy, constructability, cost efficiency, and compliance to TELUS’s Outside Plant Practices and Standards
- Drive AI initiatives to improve workflows and efficiencies
What you bring
- Degree in Engineering (Civil, Electrical, or Mechatronic preferred) or equivalent practical experience
- 7+ years of relevant experience in telecommunications outside plant engineering, with advanced knowledge of fibre & copper infrastructure, overhead and underground network design standards, and engineering processes
- Proven track record leading large capital projects and managing multi-stakeholder initiatives with demonstrated ability to deliver results on time and within budget
- Expert-level communication skills with the ability to represent the organization confidently in high-level meetings, negotiate agreements, and build strong relationships with municipalities, government entities, and internal leadership
- Strong knowledge of regulatory policies, municipal access agreements, and engineering standards that govern telecommunications infrastructure in BC
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop team members, with a collaborative approach to knowledge sharing and team building
- Forward-thinking approach with ability to identify and evaluate emerging technologies and process improvements
- Ability to work independently and have the ability to lead projects, solve complex problems, maintain effective communication, have a proactive and forward thinking mindset to maintain best interests of the company
- Strong analytical mindset with the ability to identify cost-saving opportunities, optimize processes, and evaluate emerging technologies.
- Highly autonomous, proactive, and able to lead complex initiatives with minimal direction while balancing multiple priorities
- Experience with design systems and tools such as SAP, AutoCAD, JIRA, and Spatialnet
- Willingness to travel within BC as required to meet with stakeholders, conduct site visits, and support projects across the province
Great-to-haves
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) status in British Columbia
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
- Experience leading large-scale capital infrastructure projects valued at $10M+
- Familiarity with low code platforms such Appian
