The Outside Plant Engineering team is a high-performing group of individuals who collectively make TELUS one of the leading telecommunications companies in Canada. The team is responsible for all Legacy Network Facility designs for the TELUS core network and is the gatekeeper of the TELUS Copper and Fiber network within British Columbia.


As a Design Specialist II in Outside Plant Engineering you will work as an integral member of the leadership team. You are passionate about being strategic. Your daily mission will be to facilitate the creation of timely, accurate and cost effective outputs for our partners in the build process, while searching for ways to further enhance and optimize our business with a continuous improvement mindset.


You will leverage your technical knowledge of telecommunications combined with your strategic thinking and planning skills to help shape the future of TELUS’ award - winning network.
 

What you'll do

 

  • Manage technical specifications for outside plant networks
  • Prepare estimates for customer requests and billing
  • Ensure adequate capacity of outside plant copper and fiber network is maintained
  • Ensure schedules and deadlines are monitored and adjusted appropriately
  • Review Outside Plant Design jobs for quality/reliability
  • Write detailed Statements of Work to external contractors (defines work activities and deliverables)
  • Sign off on Contractor quotes whether to proceed or seek more bids

 

Communication:

 

  • Liaise with internal and external customers to determine needs, negotiate issues to resolution, and respond to or resolve customer complaints.
  • Liaise with developers and municipal officials to provide communication infrastructure solutions
  • Lead meetings with key-stakeholders to ensure success outcomes on a project by project, job by job basis
  • Act as a prime interface between TELUS and our contract design teams to ensure key date metrics are met

 

Additional Responsibilities:

 

  • Maintain quality standards for the engineering designs
  • Cultivates internal relationships with project managers, planners, engineering manager, and engineering technicians to ensure smooth workflow and strategic alignment with priorities
  • Ensure processes are in place for quality assurance, cost control and invoice processing for external engineering labour
  • Provide a single point of contact for external departments as required for special projects and programs as required
  • Lead and/or participate in the development and preparation of financial analysis, studies, reports, and associated presentation material
  • Acting as a technical consultant for Network Infrastructure Design, Network Construction personnel and other stakeholders
  • Work closely with the other Network Planning groups, Capacity Management, Project Management, Regulatory, and Real Estate to carry out assignments requiring specialized network knowledge and awareness of potential cost, operational and service impacts and tariff implications
  • Liaise with Power Companies, Gas Companies and attend regularly scheduled meetings to cover Joint Use technical specifications used for design and constructio

 

What you bring

 

Required Skills & Abilities:

 

  • Degree in Engineering and/or equivalent practical experience
  • The ideal candidate should have experience in drafting design tools, a working knowledge of municipal and civil policies and procedures, as well as expertise in accepted engineering standards and practices for provisioning the network, along with knowledge of fiber optic infrastructure.
  • Expert-level knowledge of engineering processes and regulatory policies, along with detailed expertise in design systems and tools such as SAP, AutoCAD, JIRA, and Spatialnet.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce designs based on sound engineering economic analysis and network standards, along with strong skills in planning and organizing to meet scheduled deadlines.
  • Ability to effectively interact with external customers while working collaboratively in a team environment and with other departments
  • Must be willing to work in locations that preclude your ability to return home every day, on an as required basis
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communications skills

 

Great to have

 

  • Ability to prioritize and multitask in a fast paced, deadline driven environment and adapt to changing priority schedules
  • Prior participation in the planning, material ordering, design and deployment of network equipment in a telecommunications or data center environment
  • Familiarity with low code platforms such as JIRA and Appian

 

 

Salary Range:  $85,000-$127,000
Performance Bonus or Sales Incentive Plan:  12%

Actual total compensation will be determined based on factors such as knowledge, skills, performance and experience. In addition, TELUS offers rewarding benefits such as:
