We are the Emergency Response & Business Continuity team, dedicated to coordinating and supporting corporate preparedness, risk mitigation, emergency response, crisis management, and business continuity efforts to prioritize the safety of our team members and ensure connectivity for our communities and customers at all 4 stages of the emergency management lifecycle.
As the Emergency Response and Business Continuity Manager, you will serve a dynamic dual role: leading the organization's response to emergencies and crises during on-call rotations (which vary based on demand and seasonality), and driving strategic business continuity initiatives and operational readiness during non-on-call periods. You'll develop and implement risk mitigation strategies, prepare emergency playbooks, collaborate with internal teams and external partners, and manage transformational projects to enhance TELUS' resilience and business continuity maturity. Your role will involve quick decision-making and effective leadership during high-stress emergency situations, balanced with strategic thinking and change management to advance TELUS' business continuity posture organization-wide.
What you'll do
During On-Call Rotations (Emergency Response Focus):
- Maintain 24/7 availability to monitor, assess, and respond to climatic, physical, and human threats
- Coordinate the TELUS crisis management team and lead response efforts during emergencies
- Liaise with Federal, Provincial, Municipal, and Partner agencies to coordinate real-time response during emergency events
- Maintain the corporate Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) and emergency communication channels
- Provide situational briefings and strategic guidance to senior leadership during activated events
During Non-On-Call Periods (Business Continuity & Operational Readiness Focus):
- Lead special assignments and strategic initiatives focused on advancing TELUS' Business Continuity Management program maturity and documentation
- Champion Business Continuity (BC) awareness, training, and best practices across the organization
- Support teams in developing, updating, and exercising emergency preparedness and response playbooks
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement risk mitigation strategies and strengthen business continuity capabilities across the enterprise
- Assess current state of BC documentation, processes, and readiness; identify gaps and lead improvement initiatives
- Manage special projects and events that contribute to TELUS' overall resilience, preparedness, and BC maturity
- Develop and facilitate emergency response and business continuity training and exercise programs tailored to organizational needs
- Represent TELUS at industry and community conferences and events to educate stakeholders and community members on the TELUS Emergency Response and Business
- Continuity Program
Ongoing Responsibilities (Both Modes):
- Cultivate and maintain strategic relationships with emergency management partners at all levels of government, public safety agencies, and critical infrastructure partners to ensure coordinated response readiness
- Champion business continuity thinking across TELUS by building internal cross-functional partnerships and embedding BC practices into operational culture
- Support emergency preparedness and awareness initiatives to enhance organizational readiness and response capabilities
- Stay current with regulatory requirements, industry standards, and emerging best practices in emergency management and business continuity
What you bring
- Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Emergency Management, Business Continuity, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience in emergency response, crisis management, or business continuity)
- Demonstrated experience in risk management, emergency planning, crisis response, and/or business continuity management, with the ability to apply that expertise in high-pressure situations
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess complex situations, make informed decisions quickly under pressure, and communicate those decisions effectively to stakeholders at all levels
- Ability to operate effectively in both high-pressure crisis situations and strategic planning environments, shifting seamlessly between emergency response mode and long-term BC initiatives
- Excellent communication and leadership abilities to coordinate response efforts, facilitate cross-functional collaboration, and engage senior leadership and government agencies
- Strong presentation and facilitation skills with experience providing situational briefings and leading strategic conversations with senior leaders
- Strategic thinking and change management capabilities to drive organizational improvements in BC practices and documentation
- Comfort with on-call rotation schedules (2 weeks on, 4 weeks off with 24/7 availability during on-call periods) and flexibility to support Central Time Zone business hours across Canada
- Familiarity with modern workplace technologies and tools (Google Suite, virtual collaboration platforms, etc.) and ability to quickly learn new systems
Great-to-haves
- Professional designations such as Certified Emergency Manager (CEM), Incident Command System (ICS), Certified Business Continuity Professional (CBCP), or Member of the Business Continuity Institute (MBCI)
- Experience leading organizational change initiatives, BC program maturity assessments, or building and scaling business continuity programs within large enterprises
- Fluent French language skills (speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension) to support bilingual operations across Canada
Advanced knowledge of English is required because you will most of the time interact in English with external parties (clients, suppliers, candidates, external partners, etc.); interact in English with internal parties (colleagues, internal partners, stakeholders, etc.); and work with IT tools whose interface is only accessible in English as part of this position's main responsibilities given its national scope. #LI-Remote
