Position Overview:

 

TELUS is looking for a fully-bilingual corporate communications professional to join its Public Relations Team to support its TELUS Health portfolio. The ideal candidate for the Senior Communications Manager position has proven proficient at proactively positioning corporate initiatives in the vast, complex and ever-changing media environment. Using a holistic approach to communications, this person will possess the ability to leverage traditional and social media, sponsored channels and influencers to differentiate the TELUS Health brand. Leveraging a creative approach to proactive media campaigns, we are looking for a team member who can demonstrate success in both strategy development and end-to-end tactical execution. They will also be an adept communications project manager and have an ability to quickly shift to a reactive media stance as a spokesperson when the situation requires it.

 

One of the key attributes for this candidate will be the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and a high comfort level to function within a fast-paced environment characterized by ambiguity and complexity. Also, the ideal candidate will be a gifted writer with a demonstrated ability to creatively and successfully develop and deliver effective narratives through the production of compelling content and innovative ideas that will allow TELUS to differentiate its brand not only from other telecommunications companies, but also within the healthcare ecosystem. They will be adept at prioritizing swiftly and effectively, shifting gears to expertly manage multiple projects, budgets, and time sensitive issues when the unexpected arrives. Importantly, they will be curious, creative, autonomous, open to learning, and be the consummate team player.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Protect the TELUS brand by interacting with the media on a proactive and reactive basis with respect to issues impacting the company’s corporate and business interests
  • Manage proactive media campaigns, end-to-end, in order to increase TELUS’ brand awareness nationally within the healthcare ecosystem by leveraging earned and paid media channels, social media and influencers
  • Adapt and customize strategic national public relations campaigns intended as corporate initiatives to ensure positive visibility for the brand taking into account the characteristics of the specific provincial markets and media cycles
  • Proactively identify issues in the media that might impact TELUS’ corporate reputation or business interests in the healthcare ecosystem and beyond to recommend effective remediation measures
  • Execute best practice project management in the context of cross-functional teams including external agencies. This will require both a keen attention to detail and a clear understanding of the big picture, proactive and effective communications across multiple teams, and adept management of often-conflicting interests
  • Write compelling copy, clear and concise media and communications plans, engaging press
  • releases and messaging that effectively tells TELUS’ story to a diverse external audience
  • Provide communications counsel and support to executives and subject matter experts as required
  • Collaborate closely and on a day-to-day basis with other communications, operational, and support teams across TELUS

 

 

Qualifications

 

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

 

  • A proven ability to collaborate with and influence diverse cross-functional teams by effectively representing the TELUS Public Relations Team
  • Project management expertise, with the ability to effectively engage diverse and remote teams maintaining a view of both the overall picture and the important details
  • Highly adaptable to rapidly-changing situations and an ability to prioritize in the heat of the moment
  • Expertise in communicating technical and complex issues in a clear and concise manner to external audiences
  • An up-to-date and evolving understanding of the healthcare ecosystem, the changing nature of the national media landscape and the particularities of provincial markets; an ability to translate that understanding into best practices for public relations initiatives
  • Ability to see the big picture and anticipate emerging issues and trends, and then tailor communications strategies and tactics to address them
  • Excellent writing skills and proven success with press releases, strategic plans, reports, and more
  • Proven expertise in developing sponsored content; the ability to strategically identify pertinent opinion leaders and influencers
  • Excellent relationship-building skills
  • A demonstrated ability in managing competing interests
  • Self-starter, innovator, strategic thinker, and decision maker
  • A vast network of connections and well-established relationships among national, provincial and health-specific media outlets
  • Strong interpersonal, organizing, prioritization, and multitasking skills
  • Bilingualism – fluent in both English and French

 

Required Professional Designation/Certification:

 

  • An undergraduate degree in marketing or journalism or equivalent post-secondary education

 

Required Experience:

 

  • 5-7 years of corporate communications experience in a large complex corporate environment
  • Extensive knowledge of the health information technology and consumer health environments
  • Experience with campaigns set in B2C, B2B and B2B2E environments
  • Agency and media experience will also be considered
