The Impact You’ll Make

 

As the Canadian Indirect Tax Audit and Appeals Leader, reporting to an Indirect Tax Director you will leverage your business acumen, pro-active leadership approach and in-depth knowledge of Canadian indirect taxation to provide thoughtful and practical tax leadership across all of the various TELUS lines of business. 

 

You, and your team will be responsible for the timely and efficient management of all Canadian indirect tax audits and appeals. As a strong team player, you will build relationships and actively collaborate with a broad range of stakeholders both within and outside of TELUS to effectively manage our audit and appeal obligations. Given your creative problem solving capabilities you will be comfortable in negotiating a range of different issues with external authorities and ensuring that audits are timely closed out in a favourable manner. You will be comfortable in identifying and comparing various competing resolution options and selecting the option which best optimizes tax and business outcomes.

 

As a technical tax practitioner, your expertise in Canadian indirect taxation (GST/HST, QST, BC PST and other indirect taxes) will empower TELUS business teams to achieve tax compliance and optimize business outcomes. You'll lead the way in addressing a wide range of challenges, from mergers and acquisitions to new product launches, complex contracts, and audits. Your strategic guidance will ensure that TELUS navigates the complexities of indirect tax with agility and foresight.

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Operational Leadership: Actively support and coach a team of leading indirect tax professionals that work with stakeholders across our taxation group, TELUS businesses, external customers and vendors, and government with a particular focus on audits, appeals and litigation
  • Strategic Leadership: Cultivate strong relationships with business stakeholders to fully understand and align with their objectives. Lead cross-functional initiatives that integrate tax considerations into strategic business decisions
  • Tax Technical & Compliance: Provide expert guidance on Canadian indirect tax matters, including the interpretation of GST/HST, QST, PST legislation, case law, and government policies. Identify opportunities for tax optimization while following the TELUS Tax Strategy
  • Project and Budget Management: Lead high-impact projects, including tax planning, legislative impact assessments, and system/process improvements Balance multiple tasks and work closely with Tax and non-Tax team members, adapting to shifting priorities to support evolving business and taxation needs. Manage third party spend and ensure that budget objectives are consistently met
  • Government Relations: Engage with government authorities, using your network, to stay ahead of tax regulations and policy changes. Incorporate this knowledge into TELUS's tax planning and compliance strategies
  • Innovation & Continuous Improvement: Drive initiatives to enhance tax efficiency, compliance, and overall business performance
  • Mentorship & Development: Regardless of reporting structure the successful candidate will mentor and develop other Tax team members, fostering a culture of learning and continuous professional growth

 

 

Qualifications

 

Essential:

 

  • Indirect Tax Experience: 8+ years of Canadian indirect tax experience with strong technical experience with demonstrated leadership at a senior level
  • Leadership: Proven experience in leading and mentoring a team of tax professionals. Ability to take initiative and ownership of challenges and opportunities, seeing them through to resolution. Experience in driving significant indirect tax strategy initiatives
  • Strong Communicator: Strong oral and written communication skills to convey insights, concepts, and ideas clearly and concisely
  • Analytical Skills: Analyze and research complex issues to develop creative solutions for optimizing indirect tax positions
  • Collaboration: Ability to cultivate positive relationships and with experience in influencing others, including senior leaders
  • Curiosity and Learning Mindset: A learning mindset, creativity, drive for continuous improvement, and adaptability in the face of change and ambiguity
  • Business and Financial Leadership: Recognized for your leadership in business and finance

 

Great to Have:

 

  • Industry Knowledge: Knowledge of the telecommunications, technology, health, and/or agriculture technology industries or a strong aptitude to learn
  • Professional Development: Completion of CPA In-Depth GST/HST Course (or equivalent)
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in Google Workspace, Microsoft Excel, SAP, and other common software applications
  • Adaptability: Comfortable with or enthusiastically willing to learn new technology platforms, automation and evolving automated intelligence technologies such as prompt engineering with Generative Artificial  Intelligence software, e.g. ChatGPT
  • Education: A Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce, Accounting, and/or a professional designation – Canadian CPA or equivalent preferred
  • Languages: Bilingual in English and French is an asset

Salary Range:  $110,000-$164,000
Performance Bonus or Sales Incentive Plan:  20%

Actual total compensation will be determined based on factors such as knowledge, skills, performance and experience. In addition, TELUS offers rewarding benefits, which may vary per job function, such as:
