The Partner & Director, Head of Strategic Portfolio Development is a key senior leader within the TELUS Global Ventures Team. We work closely with both TELUS business units and key functional areas (Health, Agriculture, Business Solutions, Home Solutions, Consumer, Technology Strategy and Digital Platforms) to develop a clear understanding of their strategic aspirations and product roadmaps, build beneficial commercial relationships with current and prospective portfolio companies, and provide critical commercial partnership support and guidance (both pre and post investment) to ensure that value creation opportunities between TELUS and our portfolio companies are maximized.

 

You will play a key role in managing the end-to-end engagement lifecycle of our investments, coordinating directly with key stakeholders and potential / current portfolio company sponsors across the TELUS organization - and the entrepreneurs we invest in - to help their teams align on strategic ambitions and priorities, articulate well-researched investment themes, inform product roadmaps, define commercial partnership constructs and their associated business cases, execute against post-investment activation plans, and deliver on our value creation targets / aspirations.

Here's How

 

  • Provide day-to-day leadership to a thoughtful and well-researched end-to-end engagement lifecycle with TELUS business / functional units; identifying key stakeholders and providing bi-directional input into their future plans / product roadmaps, including definition of the unique capabilities that pipeline companies / existing TELUS Global Ventures portfolio companies bring to help our business unit partners execute against their ambitions
  • As part of the above, stay up to date on trends in the technology industry and the current and future challenges facing TELUS, with a view to directly influence and / or provide constructive input into how early stage ventures can fit into the future long-term strategic plans of our business units
  • Play a critical role in charting the overall strategy of TELUS Global Ventures, working closely with key organizational stakeholders to define clear and well articulated investment themes including how identified themes help drive TELUS and its Business Units towards realizing their strategic ambitions
  • Lead the development of business cases and post-investment commercial activation / value creation plans, in light of our overarching purpose and intent behind the investment
  • Play a key role in the successful execution, performance measurement / tracking, and assessment of active commercial activities and strategic partnership with the broader TELUS organization by aiding the business units in resolving any key risks / roadblocks in a timely fashion, ensuring that sustainable value is being created
  • Develop, track and influence the TELUS Ventures team’s ongoing value creation strategy by supporting relationship managers in the development of key business unit relationships with senior leaders from across the organization
    Proactively identify opportunities to 1) expand and grow strategic partnerships within the sponsoring business unit 2) drive cross-pollination of the ventures portfolio companies in other business units / areas of TELUS

 

 

Qualifications

 

What you bring

 

  • 8-10 years of experience in management consulting (ideally in telecom, health or technology innovation) with a top-tier firm or a corporate venture capital fund or progressive responsibility in corporate or business development (5+ years) or driving external partnerships/Large Complex Sales in top tier technology based organization (5+ years)
  • Proven experience in establishing and managing key senior stakeholder relationships, becoming their trusted advisor
  • Ability to understand technology and / or business objectives, translate those to actionable outcomes, and subsequently provide oversight / management to achieve objectives
  • Excellent presentation skills including exec briefings via PowerPoint and in person briefings
  • Exceptional project management capabilities with ability to coordinate multiple, simultaneous investment opportunities, commercial partnerships and value creation projects / initiatives
  • Comfortably in working within an ambiguous fast-paced environment of rapid change and evolving priorities
  • Ability to push for results among peers and stakeholders external to the team, while building consensus and buy in amongst all levels
  • University degree in Technology (Computer Science/Engineering) or Business, or similar

 

 

Salary Range:  $133,000-$199,000
Performance Bonus or Sales Incentive Plan:  30%

Actual total compensation will be determined based on factors such as knowledge, skills, performance and experience. In addition, TELUS offers rewarding benefits, which may vary per job function, such as:
