Purpose

 

Our Regulatory Affairs group advocates before the CRTC and other public bodies and advises our business on regulatory and public law matters. We apply legal and public policy principles along with technical knowledge to advance TELUS’ objectives within the Canadian communications industry.

 

This is a senior leadership role that combines people and file management with demonstrated expertise in relevant areas of law. As the Director, Regulatory Affairs, you will lead a team of lawyers responsible principally for public law advocacy matters before the CRTC, the Competition Bureau, ISED, the Copyright Board, the courts, and other public bodies. You and your team will also be called upon to provide advice to our businesses, and will collaborate with team members across Canada to advance our interests.

 

Working in lock step with our business units, as well as our public affairs and government relations teams, you will have regular contact with stakeholders throughout TELUS and with our regulators, and will be responsible for communicating significant matters to ELT and senior business unit leaders.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Lead and supervise a team of lawyers, as well as mentor and train professional staff, to run critical files from inception to completion
  • Oversee the creation of TELUS’ submissions in public proceedings
  • Work in collaboration with our business units, government relations, and public affairs team to deliver an integrated advocacy effort
  • Advise senior management and their business units on new regulations and support compliance activities

 

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA)

 

  • Exceptional written advocacy skills
  • Experience in telecommunications law, broadcasting law, copyright law, administrative law, competition law, and/or civil litigation
  • Experience (whether formally or informally) leading or mentoring teams of lawyers
  • Demonstrated experience briefing senior leadership on legal and policy developments, and ability to lead policy discussions in meetings involving senior management and other TELUS team members

 

Education and Professional Experience

 

  • Professional accreditation or certification: 
    • License in good standing to practice law in a province in Canada
  • Minimum of 8 years’ post-call legal experience

 

Great to Haves:

 

  • Fluency in French

Salary Range:  $132,000-$198,000
Performance Bonus or Sales Incentive Plan:  30%
