As an Indirect Tax Senior Manager, you will leverage your business acumen, pro-active leadership approach and in-depth knowledge of indirect taxation (GST/HST, QST, PST and/or US indirect taxes) to actively lead TELUS business teams to be successful in planning for and achieving tax compliance. You will drive creative solutions in relation to a broad range of challenges including acquisitions, new product introductions, business process changes, systems implementations, audits and appeals. As a strong team player, you will build relationships and actively collaborate with a broad range of stakeholders both within and outside of TELUS to quickly solve complex tax problems. Given your creative problem solving capabilities you will be comfortable identifying and comparing various competing resolution options and selecting the option which best optimizes tax and business outcomes. As a technical tax practitioner, you will be comfortable with providing indirect tax guidance on complex contracts and with the interpretation of tax legislation, case law and government issued policies to lead the business to achieving tax compliance.

 

As a highly organized and adaptable professional, you will be comfortable in managing competing priorities and working closely with your Tax and non-Tax colleagues to ensure that deadlines and other expectations are met. As a flexible performer, you will show your skills, as required, in transitioning from detail oriented work to a broader “bigger picture” approach. You will bring an aptitude for learning. You will be comfortable in shifting and re-allocating priorities in order to support evolving business and taxation needs.

 

Here's how

 

  • Build relationships with business stakeholders to fully understand the business priorities and challenges
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the tax legislation (and especially GST/HST, QST and PST laws), jurisprudence and policies which impact on our business in order to optimize outcomes
  • Leading projects and initiatives as identified by the Vice President, Taxation, or other stakeholders such as planning opportunities, gap analysis, Federal/Provincial budget and legislation analysis, and data extraction from TELUS systems. 
  • Pro-actively liaise with government authorities to fully understand leading government imperatives and incorporate that knowledge into our planning processes
  • Pro-actively support broad range of internal initiatives as they relate to indirect taxation including mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, formation of partnerships or alliances including any supply chain related proposed changes
  • Critically evaluate current and/or proposed systems and business processes for tax related weaknesses and/or opportunities for improvement and support initiatives to change those systems and processes
  • Actively support systems implementations, business process changes and other projects with a view to optimizing taxation outcomes

  • Valued for your 7+ years of Canadian indirect tax experience, in-depth indirect tax knowledge and strong technical competence
  • Recognized as a strong communicator who conveys, both orally and in writing, insights, concepts and ideas in a clear, simple and concise manner
  • Knowledge of the telecommunications, technology, health and agriculture technology industry
  • Respected as a collaborative partner who cultivates positive relationships and influences others, including senior leaders
  • Talented at analyzing and researching complex issues and developing creative solutions to optimize indirect tax positions
  • A leader with the ability to take initiative and ownership of challenges and opportunities and see them through to resolution
  • Appreciated for your curiosity and learning mindset, initiative, creativity and drive for continuous process improvement, and adaptability when faced with change and/or ambiguity
  • Recognized for your business and financial leadership


Great-to-haves

 

  • Knowledge of telecommunications, technology, health and/or agriculture technology industries or strong aptitude to learn
  • Completion of CPA In-Depth GST/HST Course (or equivalent)
  • Capable in Microsoft Suite, Google Workspace and SAP, other common software and automation applications
  • A Bachelor Degree in Commerce, Accounting and/or a professional designation – Canadian CPA or equivalent preferred
