As part of this smart, dynamic, high performing team, you will lead the full lifecycle of investment deal activities, from identifying and sourcing potential investments, through due diligence and deal execution. You are equally thrilled by researching future technologies, the prospect of finding and engaging with optimistic entrepreneurs who want to change the world, and engaging with TELUS executives to understand their strategic goals. Post investment, you will also support portfolio companies as necessary to help them deliver above-average financial returns and engage TELUS executives to ensure integration with their strategic objectives. Additionally, you may be called upon to sit on these respective Company’s board of directors as the TELUS representative.
What you’ll do
- Develop thematic investment thesis aligned with TELUS’ strategic objectives, and generate deal flow for top tier opportunities by proactively identifying, assessing and meeting with companies and ecosystem partners and develop financial models for the evaluation of investment opportunities
- Leverage your network of industry connections to drive deal sourcing and cultivating executive relationships in startup and venture ecosystems to ensure high volume of sourcing opportunities
- Lead the negotiation of financings in potential portfolio companies, including valuation and key business terms
- Track financial and impact KPIs and provide quarterly updates, flagging risks/issues and opportunities including follow on / secondary opportunities and exit opportunities
- Collaborate with TELUS executives for assessment and approval of investment opportunities
- Build shareholder value of the TELUS Ventures' portfolio companies through active management at the board level which includes: building company maturity with respect to product development, go-to-market and finance; reviewing and approving portfolio company budgets; negotiating salaries of portfolio company executives; and participating in audit and compensation committees of the board
- Mentor and develop more junior Ventures team members
What you bring
- Proven ability to coordinate multiple, simultaneous projects and initiatives in the portfolio and work within an environment of rapid change and evolving priorities
- Extensive investment and venture capital experience and a track record of generating strong returns including experience in technical, financial and management evaluation as part of investment due diligence
- Entrepreneurial spirit which will drive passionate ownership, process improvement and responsibility for the portfolio of investments
- Superior Emotional Intelligence (EQ), relationship management and collaboration skills including the ability to collaborate effectively in situations without formal influence & across geographies
- Strong presentation and communication skills (with experience interacting with senior leaders in both large and small organizations)
- Bachelor's degree from top tier program, preferably in Economics, Finance or a related field
- 8+ years experience in leading transactions in private company investments and/or deal execution management, preferably in the venture capital, investment banking, telecommunications and/or technology industries
Great to haves
- CPA, CFA, and/or MBA is a preferred
- Experience as a Board Director/Observer
